How to wash children’s tights and leggings so they last longer

  • 5 min read

Tights containing baby alpaca can, with appropriate care, be passed on to a younger sibling. High temperatures and unsuitable detergent, however, will not help. Together with Econea, we reviewed a selection of detergents for caring for our tights, leggings and shorts. Always follow both the garment’s care label and the detergent manufacturer’s instructions.

Quick summary

  • For cotton, choose a gentle liquid detergent and the temperature shown on the label, usually 30 to 40 °C.
  • For baby alpaca, use detergent intended for wool and silk, and a wool cycle or hand wash up to 30 °C as permitted by the label.
  • For alpaca garments, avoid fabric softener, wringing and tumble drying.
  • Adjust the detergent dose to water hardness and the manufacturer’s instructions.

How should you choose a detergent?

Choose detergent according to the material, care label and individual skin tolerance. Children’s clothing is washed frequently, so the following four points are worth considering.

Liquid detergent at low temperatures

Tights and leggings are often washed at low temperatures or by hand. In unsuitable conditions or at the wrong dose, powder may not dissolve completely. Liquid detergent can be practical, but correct dosing and thorough rinsing matter too.

Ingredients and individual tolerance

For sensitive skin, consider an unperfumed detergent without unnecessary dyes. Neither “natural” nor “hypoallergenic” guarantees that a product suits every child. Tights are in contact with skin for much of the day, so watch how your child responds.

Use a suitable product for wool

Wool and alpaca are protein fibres. Some enzymes, particularly proteases, can damage them. Choose detergent explicitly intended for wool and silk instead of automatically using an ordinary all-purpose product.

Leave out fabric softener

Do not use fabric softener on alpaca garments. Unnecessary additives can affect the fibres’ properties. For cotton too, follow the garment label and detergent manufacturer’s recommendations.

Dosage depends on water hardness, load size and soiling. Hard water may require a different dose from soft water. Do not pour detergent by guesswork: excess residue can be harder to rinse out.

How does washing cotton differ from washing alpaca?

Organic cotton generally allows more routine care than alpaca. However, always check the specific garment’s label for its permitted temperature and whether stains can be pretreated.

Baby alpaca needs gentler handling: hand washing or a suitable wool cycle up to 30 °C when the label permits it, detergent for wool and silk, and drying flat. Appropriate care helps preserve the material’s shape and properties.

We have therefore grouped the suggestions according to the garment you are washing.

Natuty detergent for wool and silk

One option is Natuty detergent for wool and silk. The partner’s range describes it as suitable for delicate fibres and hand washing. Before use, check the current ingredients, dose and recommended temperature on the packaging. The number of washes depends on dosage, water hardness and load size.

Sonett olive laundry liquid for wool and silk

Another option is Sonett olive laundry liquid for wool and silk. This product is intended for wool and silk. Follow its current instructions for hand washing or a wool cycle and adjust the dose to your water. Check available pack sizes with the retailer.

The same rule applies to both: turn tights inside out, do not wring them and let them dry flat on a towel. Do not tumble-dry alpaca garments. Find more advice in our PEQNE product care guide.

What should you use for organic cotton shorts?

For organic cotton shorts with braces, you generally have a wider choice of detergents. Always follow the care symbols on the particular product’s label.

Tierra Verde laundry gel for sensitive skin

One option is Tierra Verde laundry gel for sensitive skin. Check the current ingredients, intended use and wash temperature when choosing. An unperfumed version can be helpful for sensitive skin, although suitability is individual. No detergent guarantees unchanged colour under every washing method.

Sonett Sensitive all-purpose laundry liquid

If you are looking for an unperfumed option for cotton clothes, consider Sonett Sensitive all-purpose laundry liquid. For sensitive skin, watch individual reactions and rinse laundry thoroughly. Do not assume this type of detergent is also suitable for wool or silk: check the manufacturer’s current instructions.

Sonett laundry liquid for coloured clothes

Another option for coloured cotton garments is Sonett laundry liquid for coloured clothes. Choose it according to the care symbols and current ingredients. If it contains fragrance or essential oils, an unperfumed alternative may be preferable for someone sensitive to fragrance.

Can one detergent suit the whole children’s wardrobe?

Yes, if the manufacturer explicitly states suitability for all the materials you want to wash. An example from the partner’s selection is Mulieres concentrated fragrance-free laundry liquid. Before using it on wool or silk, check the current intended use on the packaging and follow the garment’s label too. Detergent labels and certifications apply to that detergent, not automatically to the clothing or its tolerance by every child.

Compare yield and cost per wash using the recommended dose, pack size and your household’s water hardness.

What should you avoid when washing our garments?

  • Unsuitable powders and washing soda: do not use them on alpaca garments without the manufacturer’s explicit recommendation. Strongly alkaline products are not an automatic choice for delicate animal fibres.
  • Detergents combined with fabric softener: they may seem convenient, but leave out fabric softener when washing alpaca.
  • Marseille soap: it can help pretreat some stains on cotton if the care label permits it. With alpaca, avoid aggressive rubbing and experimenting with stain removal.

Small steps are enough

You do not need to replace all your laundry supplies immediately. Start by checking labels and choosing suitable detergent for alpaca and cotton. The right dose, gentle cycle and suitable drying method help keep garments in good condition.
